I just got back from the Houston vigil we did at the Montrose Remembrance Garden, remembering Houston folks who have been murdered due to discrimination based on their gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation. We also remembered all of the unknown TBLG suicide victims who have died in this city because our society tells us queer folks we are ‘less than.’ Those remembered by name today include: Unknown victim, Julia Carrizales, Brandi Houston, Bibi Barajas, Michael Charles Hurd, Cinnamon (Kendrick), Christina Smith, Maribelle Reyes, Myra Chanel Ical, Aaron Scheerhoorn, and Paul Broussard. Thank you Bebe Taylor Willcutt, William Fu, Chris Brombacher and especially Johnny Hooks for sharing this vigil with me. Johnny gets the special shout out because if it weren’t for him, this vigil would not have taken place. If you live in the Houston area please go to the Montrose Remembrance Garden some time. We must continue to keep alive the stories of the countless TBLG people we’ve lost.
